The Accountability Projects
For each situation GAN investigates, it establishes an Accountability Project in partnership with support chapters at an academic institution. GAN’s first such venture was the Syrian Accountability Project (SAP) at Syracuse University College of Law.
Since its founding in 2015, GAN has successfully applied SAP's model to establish Accountability Projects for Ukraine, Syria, Yemen, Venezuela, and the Pacific Rim region. GAN is also working to establish an Accountability Project for International Modern Slavery.
The Syrian Accountability Project (SAP) is an internationally recognized cooperative effort between activists, non-governmental organizations, students, and other interested parties to document war crimes and crimes against humanity in the context of the Syrian Crisis.
The Yemen Accountability Project (YAP) was founded in 2018 as a cooperative effort between legal scholars, non-governmental organizations, students, and other interested parties. The project’s members investigate and analyze open-source materials covering the Yemeni Civil War.
In 2020, GAN founded the Venezuela Accountability Project (VAP) to investigate atrocity crimes perpetrated by the Maduro Regime against the people of Venezuela. VAP was forged as a joint-venture between the Organization of American States (OAS), the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and supported by the University of Toronto Faculty of Law and the Raoul Wallenberg Center for Human Rights.
In 2022, members of SAP from the Syracuse University College of Law laid the foundations for a Ukraine Accountability Project through the Ukraine Task Force. The Ukraine Accountability Project has published several white papers providing a sample indictment and a roadmap for a special tribunal to prosecute war crimes committed against the people of Ukraine.
In 2022, GAN launched the Pacific Rim Accountability Project, a cooperative effort between activists, non-governmental organizations, students, and other interested parties to document incidents that may amount to genocide or crimes against humanity committed in the Pacific Rim region.
